At St. Marys, our Physical Education (PE) curriculum is designed to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities, while instilling a lifelong passion for health, fitness, and active living. To deliver a progressive and high-quality PE education, we use the highly regarded Cambridgeshire County Council Scheme of Work for Physical Education. Built on the core principle of ‘learning to move and moving to learn’, our curriculum provides a structured, balanced framework that supports every child’s physical competence and personal growth from Early Years right through to Key Stage 2.
Through the Cambridgeshire scheme, learning is carefully sequenced into age-appropriate, progressive units. In Key Stage 1, pupils focus on mastering fundamental movement skills—such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, and balancing—through creative games, gymnastics, and dance. As pupils move through Key Stage 2, these core skills are applied and refined within generic activity areas and specific sports, including athletics, outdoor adventurous activities (OAA), swimming, and team games. Alongside physical agility, our lessons emphasise teamwork, sportsmanship, resilience, and tactical understanding, empowering pupils to challenge themselves, celebrate personal progress, and collaborate respectfully with others.
