At St. Marys, our Religious Education (RE) curriculum is designed to provoke challenging questions about meaning and purpose, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong, and what it means to be human. To deliver a deep and meaningful study of Christianity alongside other world faiths and world-views, we use the Understanding Christianity resource as a core framework for our teaching on the Christian faith.

The Understanding Christianity approach enables pupils to develop clear religious literacy through a coherent, spiral learning model. Key theological concepts—such as Creation, Fall, People of God, Incarnation, Gospel, Salvation, and Kingdom of God—are explored progressively as pupils move through the school. Lessons are built around a clear three-step enquiry process: Text (exploring core biblical texts), Concept (understanding the theological ideas behind them), and Impact/Living (examining how these beliefs shape the everyday lives of Christians today and reflecting on pupils' own ideas and world-views).

Alongside our study of Christianity, our RE curriculum ensures pupils explore other major world religions (such as Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Sikhism) and non-religious world-views (such as Humanism). Through thoughtful discussion, text analysis, and enquiry, our pupils learn to articulate their own insights, engage respectfully with diverse viewpoints, and build a nuanced understanding of a complex, multi-faith world.
